``THE UNDERSIDE OF THE ERASURES`` OF IMED JEMAIEL” AS A WATERMARK…

by Samia HARRAR

You have to take your time; sit down, watch, carefully scrutinize one detail, then another, get up, dizzy, take your eyes elsewhere, before returning, as if in a state of hypnosis, to try to decode this world swarming with signs , which devours the heart of the canvas, nibbles on the edges, engulfs the whites or the sepia, infuses blue, red, gold, curves in interlacings which undo and make this palimpsest, where are written obsessions? concern of an artist-painter who “writes as one draws and draws as one writes”, an infinity of universes. Imed Jemaïel, visual artist born in Bizerte in 1965, who has also taught at the School of Fine Arts in Tunis since 1992, exhibits his works at the Gorgi gallery (Sidi Bousaïd), and explodes (his) “below natures” like others let themselves go to an underground swaying of music, coming from a country that does not exist anywhere, but, which he nevertheless recognizes, like the pulsations of his own heart. Acrylic on canvas, or again, the rustle of life, which runs through the surface to be dressed, rather the surface to be inhabited is rich in exploration, as unexpected as it is fertile, overlooking a breathless writing or as if drawn with a line where agent in turn, an eye, another eye, a mouth, an infinity of carnivores with carnivorous teeth, fish, but also other strange creatures that flutter, twitch, as if suffocated or weightless. Natures? Another signature: infinitely more significant than all the signifiers that would have reason to exist, because they are disarticulated and terribly disturbing.
